To support the recycling and sustainability initiative of the DOE, all Oʻahu schools with recycling programs should follow these simple steps for waste management in classrooms and throughout the campus:
- Separate regular trash from recyclables.
-
Recyclables consist of the following materials:
- Plastics (non-HI5) with resin codes #1 (PETE), or #2 (HDPE) – Commonly found on 2-liter soft drink bottles and other beverages, cooking oil bottles, peanut butter jars, detergent bottles, shampoo, vitamin, milk jugs, etc.
- Glass bottles and jars – Remove and discard lids and tops; okay to leave labels on.
- Newspapers – No magazines and glossy inserts.
- Corrugated cardboard boxes – Corrugated only. No single layer chipboard such as cereal boxes, detergent boxes, tissue boxes, etc. Breakdown or collapse all card board boxes before depositing into the recycling container to save space and maximize the container's capacity.
- White & Colored Office Paper – Bond paper only and paper bags.
- Aluminum and tinned ferrous cans – Rinse, okay to crush.
- Deposit regular trash into the regular trash container and deposit recyclables into the recycling container (marked “Recycle Only”).
- If there are more recyclables than the recycling container can hold, deposit recyclable items in trash bags and place the bags adjacent (2 to 3 feet away but not in front) to the recycling container. Truck drivers will pick up the bagged recyclables after emptying the recycling containers into their truck.
Your help in encouraging the school’s recycling efforts, as well as your assistance and support of the DOE’s recycling program is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Danilo Cabalang at Facilities Maintenance Branch.
